New Music Day….and the joys of opening a CD case
I just purchased and opened 3 new CD’s. I get that it’s a digital world and everything, but there is something special that happens with a new CD. You fight the plastic cover for a minute or two, but finally cave and grab some scissors. Quickly you dispose of your clear crackly enemy and examine the cover. Open up the jewel case, examine the art maybe even read some liner notes. Then, carefully, pop out the disc. Then, even though it’s new, you examine the shit out of it. No scratches. Perfect. You fall in love with it. And, in the same way you treat a favorite stuff animal, you proceed to beat it up over time-outta of love. Keeping that disc pristine….for a while. But that case doesn’t stand a chance. Because that’s how you love music. You play it..over and over.
It’s easy to hit that ‘import CD’ button. But before those tunes get dumped onto an iPod, something special happens. You actually get to touch something you bought. It’s yours.
